Welcome to the latest news update from the School of Public Policy
A Socially Distanced New Academic Year
With a new academic year, we are delighted to welcome a new cohort of students to the School of Public Policy! We are working hard to keep our students safe and supported through new working practices and socially distanced learning, while still providing them with an SPP experience that will last a lifetime. Having enjoyed a busy Welcome Week getting to know fellow coursemates and academics, our students are now ready to begin life at the SPP in full.

We're welcoming not only new students, but a new cohort of alumni to our vibrant alumni community. Whether you've only just graduated or are looking to reconnect, why not:

Alumni Events
Kick-start the year by celebrating friends and faculty!

A special social to welcome our new alumni to the SPP community, this event is open to all our recent alumni (those who graduated between 2015-2020). Reconnect with fellow coursemates and faculty, catch up with friends, and find out about what's been happening at the SPP. We're looking forward to seeing you there!

Book online by 4PM BST on the day - Zoom details will only be sent to those who have registered, so make sure we know you're coming! If you have any questions, please get in touch at h.c.shearer@lse.ac.uk.

We have a packed term ahead - future alumni events will include:

COVID-19 Discussion: The 'Post-COVID' World

Tuesday 11 November; 5:30 - 7pm GMT

As the global response to COVID-19 develops, all our alumni are invited to a collaborative discussion about the pandemic response and how our world is looking ahead to the future. In partnership with the Institute of Global Affairs, we will be hearing IGA academics talk on a 'post-COVID' future, after which alumni will be invited to share their own thoughts and experiences.

International Social

Monday 16 November; 12:30 - 1:30pm GMT

All alumni based in Oceania and East Asia are invited to join our evening social with Professor Andres Velasco and Department Manager Paul Sullivan - a chance for alumni to catch up with each other, hear the news from SPP, and share your thoughts on the alumni programme.

( Please note, due to COVID regulations all events will be held online until further notice.)

Alumni in Action
Our Alumni in the Spotlight is one of our most recent alumni: Akash Mehta (MPA, 2020).  Having just graduated from the SPP, Akash is now excited to begin a new career supporting the environment as an Environmental Analyst at the World Bank. You can read more about Akash's story online.

Do you know an alumnus whose story should be shared with the SPP community? It could be a friend, a colleague, someone whose work you admire from afar - it could even be yourself! Drop us a line to recommend the next alumni profile.
Department News
New Faces at the SPP
With Paul Sullivan moving to part-time to take on a new role as Interim Head of Strategy Delivery at the LSE Directorate, we're happy to announce that he will be sharing the Department Manager role with Nicola Foster: previously Head of Programme Delivery at the Department of Management.

Nic says:  I’m delighted to be joining the School of Public Policy! I am looking forward to engaging with the diverse and rich academic community of staff and students in the Department. I hope to have the opportunity to meet many of you at upcoming events this year.
We welcome to our teaching staff Dr Rachael McLellan, our new Fellow in Political Science and Public Policy. Rachael comes to us from the Politics Department at Princeton University, and she studies the strategies of electoral autocrats and opposition parties at the local level. Her book project asks how  local control - who wins local elections - affects how ruling and opposition parties compete for votes.
Finally, we're also welcoming Ros Taylor, our COVID-19 Blog Editor, and Jemima Warren, the MPP Programme Manager, to the professional services team. A warm welcome to all our new faces at the SPP!
Happy Birthday LSE!
LSE is celebrating its 125th Anniversary - to mark the occasion Kristina Georgieva, the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, will be joining us for an online event. Kristina will be delivering the outlook for the global economy and outlining policy priorities to overcome the COVID-19 Crisis.

This event will be held on 6th October 2020 from 1:00PM - 2:00PM BST. This event is free to all, but pre-registration is required - to register, visit our event page here.
