Our alumni community has a wealth of experience, and their work makes a huge difference around the world. Join us for a panel talk with some of our alumni facing these issues today.

We will also be running alumni career panels for our students over the course of the term. Connecting with alumni is so important to our students, particularly during the ongoing pandemic, so a huge thank you to everyone involved.

Thank You for Supporting the SPP

We are so incredibly grateful to all our alumni and friends for the support you show us: either through financial support or by donating your time towards student support through career panels, providing capstone projects, or simple advice.

Over the financial year 2019-20 we received over £500, 000 from our community: almost all directed to financial aid and scholarships. Everyone at the School of Public Policy is hugely grateful for your kindness, and we would like to pass on our thanks to everyone who has donated either to the School or the wider LSE community. Your support helps us do wonderful things, and we are delighted to continue to offer an outstanding policy education experience to our students even in such unusual times.

You can find out more about financially supporting the SPP here.

Luksic Scholars

As part of this generous support received, we are proud to announce the founding of the new Luksic scholarship: a programme which supports postgraduate students from Chile joining the SPP. These scholarships are needs-based and will support up to ten beneficiaries a year. We’re delighted to be able to offer this new opportunity to talented young professionals who will go on to change the world through their policy-making, and we thank the Luksic family for their generosity in making this happen.

We are also thrilled to welcome the first cohort of Luksic Scholars to the SPP, and hope that their time here is an enjoyable and informative one!

You can find out more about our first Luksic Scholars here.

New Roles for Sara Hagemann and Adnan Khan
We are excited to share an important change in the SPP: as of January 2021 Dr Sara Hagemann has begun a new role at the SPP as Associate Dean for Extended Education. She will be leading our executive and online teaching in the department, as well as continuing her teaching and other activities within the academic programmes.
In Sara's place we're delighted to announce that Professor Adnan Khan has taken up the role as new Academic Director. Adnan brings a wealth of experience in research, teaching, and policy making: with over fifteen years as a policy practitioner, maker, and activist, and over ten years as a researcher and lecturer. We are excited to welcome Adnan in this new role and look forward to hearing more from him in the future.

Maryam Annual Forum 2020

The first annual LSE Maryam Annual Forum took place online from 8-10th 2020; giving attending students the chance to meet and work alongside global thought-leaders and professionals. The conference focussed around the subject of One Year On: Lessons Learnt and ‘New Normals’ in a Post-COVID World’, hosting leaders from the G7 and G20, influential academics, and innovative businesspeople.

The Forum built upon discussions and findings of six Co-Labs (year-round working groups developing research-based policy solutions to support the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development) that were launched in September; and a public letter was addressed to G7, G20 and national leaders containing the Forum’s policy recommendations.

You can find out more about the LSE Maryam Forum online, as well as listen to all recordings from the sessions online and read the Co-Lab student leaders' findings on the LSE COVID-19 blog.

LSE COVID-19 Blog
' How New Zealand eliminated COVID-19'

New Zealand's track record with COVID-19 is famously good. Current EMPA student Joe Stockman - who worked on the country’s COVID-19 response as a Chief Advisor to the country's Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment - explains how decisiveness, a successful communications strategy, a committed civil service and a degree of luck enabled it to return quickly to normal life.

London's Mayor at 20

Professor Tony Travers has co-authored a book examining the evolution of the role of Mayor of London. Marking the twentieth anniversary of the position's creation, London's Mayor of 20 examines how the first three mayors have approached the role - and how the position has transformed to meet London's changing needs.

Chile's Great Pension Raid

Writing for Project Syndicate, Professor Andrés Velasco examines the inevitable crashes of populist cycles. He suggests that for many Chileans, this crash may only come when they reach old age with no retirement savings.
